Interest Rates, Bonds, and Your Portfolio

With the rate environment shifting, fixed income is back in focus. Here's how we're thinking about bond allocations for our clients.

After years in which low interest rates made bonds a reluctant holding for many investors, the rate environment has fundamentally changed. The first quarter of 2026 saw continued discussion among policymakers about the pace and timing of any future rate adjustments, keeping yields at levels that make fixed income genuinely attractive for the first time in over a decade.

For retirees and conservative investors, this is meaningful. A diversified bond portfolio can now generate a yield that meaningfully contributes to income needs — something that was difficult to achieve in the near-zero rate environment of the prior decade. The role of fixed income in a retirement portfolio has been restored.

Duration management remains important. Longer-duration bonds are more sensitive to interest rate changes — if rates rise further, longer bonds will experience more price decline than shorter ones. For clients who are uncertain about the rate trajectory, a laddered approach — holding bonds that mature at different intervals — provides both income and flexibility.

Investment-grade corporate bonds and short-to-intermediate Treasuries have been the focus of our fixed income positioning. High-yield bonds offer higher income but carry credit risk that may not be appropriate for clients whose primary goal is capital preservation and income reliability.

Municipal bonds deserve special attention for clients in higher tax brackets. The tax-equivalent yield on munis — particularly for those in the 32% or higher federal bracket — can make them more attractive than comparable taxable bonds on an after-tax basis. This calculation should be revisited as tax laws evolve.

The broader point is that bonds are doing their job again. A balanced portfolio with a meaningful fixed income allocation is better positioned today than it was three years ago to provide income, reduce volatility, and serve as a counterweight to equity risk. We are actively reviewing client allocations to ensure they are taking appropriate advantage of the current environment.
